When you die, there are benefits provided by the government to help with costs such as your funeral. Some of the main benefits are below - please note that eligibility conditions apply.
Funeral payment
For those on low income and needing financial help to pay for a funeral, a one off funeral payment from the Social Fund may be available. Some or all of it may have to be repaid from your estate.
Bereavement payment
Your husband, wife or civil partner may be able to get a bereavement payment. This is a one off, lump-sum payment of £2,000, that's tax-free.
Bereavement allowance
Your widowed husband, wife or civil partner may be able to claim a bereavement allowance. This is a taxable weekly benefit which will be paid to them for up to 52 weeks from the date you die.
